Wildlife of my world

Here is a list of the wildlife of Verdenzye. Since it has a lot of varied ecosystems, there will be a lot of entries over time. I've grouped them according to location and biome.

Forest Creatures

Creature Description
Luminatte A graceful six-legged creature with bioluminescent antler-like horns that light up the forest at night. It uses its mid and hind legs to brace itself when restraining its prey, then uses the venom-tipped spurs on its forelegs to paralyze and kill its targets. A common steed when domesticated.
Maasket A cat-like animal with a mossy fuzz covering its body that helps it blend into the forest floor. Look for the twinkle of 3 golden eyes among the peat lest you step on them and have them raise the yowl that brings their clan to the rescue.
Murmuring Ivis Murmuring Ivises are elusive nocturnal scavengers known for their ghostly calls that echo through the forest at night. They can fly, and look somewhat similar to earth-owls, but their odd, many-pupiled golden eyes suggest they see a very different view of the world than the other denizens. Locals once believed that their strange, susurrating cries were of men cursed by a local deity for their shallow anger, and turned into harpies. Although these sounds now have a scientific explanation, these creatures are still sometimes mistaken for harpies by children and teenagers.

Shoreline Creatures

Creature Description
Sandstrider A large ten-legged thing with a long, narrow head, thorax and abdomen that scuttles swiftly across the beach sands, and can survive without food for several months. They are prized by locals as low-maintenance task beasts and transportation, as they feed on poisonous shoreline flora and need only common zinc supplements to maintain their vigor. They're also oddly affectionate, although their metallic drool is bad for clothing.
Splithead Serpent A strange venomous water serpent that lives in seaside fens, and can occasionally be found with more than one head. In Shune, one was found with 8 heads, and it was auctioned on a livestream to a private collector, who called it "The 8-Headed Siren". It didn't seem happy about it.
Rimespitter A small, finned creature found in the northern coastal waters. It can freeze water brought in through gill-like flaps using a freon-generating gland, and then expel the freezing water into the faces of its smaller prey.

Mountain Creatures

Creature Description
Rockcreep A type of mobile mold colony common to the mountains of Roko, capable of surprisingly quick bursts of locomotion with its flagella. They often startle mountain climbers when they burst from cracks and crevices, often dangerously so.
Belleraptor A bird only ever seen on the continent of Roko, known for its translucient, sheet-like plumage, singular eye and distinctive call. It's a notoriously intelligent but mean flying animal, prone to sudden changes in mood and preference. It will often learn single words or phrases and repeat them until it gets the angry reactions it loves. Letting a belleraptor annoy you is the way you tame them, after all.
Gnurl A large, chitin-armored species that can curl in on itself for protection, or to safely roll down steep slopes. It's surprisingly good at climbing thanks to its longer-than-expected limbs, and it is believed that the rolling behavior is a simple adaptation to get back down again. Its chitin has a thin layer of fluff.

Wetland Creatures

Creature Description
Ghast-croaker A creature with pale, poisonous skin stretched over a porous exoskeleton. The eyes? Poison sacs. The tongue? A proboscis. The large froggish smile? Probably the last thing its prey will see, as the Ghast-croaker's versatile skin enables a wide variety of advanced camouflage.

Grassland Creatures

Creature Description
Non-Cat The infamous non-cat is still an earth-cat, despite the name. However, since it uses a combination of pheromones and beta wave interference to create convincing illusions of its presence while it sneaks up on its distracted prey, many would-be hunters began to believe it didn't really exist. It was experimented on and brought over to Verdenzye in much the same way as earth-bats and the people on this planet were.
